JOHN 1-7

The Gospel of John is considered to be the final gospel written, likely many years after the writing of the other three gospels. Most scholars consider that the Gospel of John was written around 90 AD while the other gospels were written between 60-85 AD. As you study through the Gospel of John, you may see it reads quite differently than reading the other gospels. Further, the Gospel of John presumes a knowledge of the other gospel accounts. Many of the accounts and teachings that John tells about Jesus are not found in the other gospels. Not only does the Gospel of John presume some knowledge of the life of Jesus from the other gospel accounts, it also presumes a knowledge of the Old Testament teachings and imagery. Plummer wrote that the Gospel of John “is saturated with the thoughts, imagery, and language of the Old Testament.” As you study this gospel be looking for the unique teachings of John and its reliance on the Old Testament imagery.
